5. Discussion Guidelines

All postings should be technology-related in some way. Net etiquette is strongly encouraged at all times and the list is intended to be self- managing. Postings are unmoderated and therefore the list requires members to be responsible and courteous in what they post. Discussions of a personal nature, flames, profanity, or excessively commercial posts will not be permitted. Questions regarding the appropriateness of a post should be directed to the list administrator.

Keep in mind that what you say may not be taken well by others, so be nice. Remember, your boss could also be a subscriber.

Violations of these guidelines will result in private warnings to the offending party. Continued violations will result net holidays or in that party being banned from the list. Any instance of overt mailbombing shall result in immediate removal from the list. All such actions shall be solely at the discretion of the list administrator.

Members who disagree with the appropriateness of a posting should first contact the other party by private email and make their views known directly. Please use courtesy, respect and discretion in any such discussions. Public embarrassment of any member via the list is not permitted. Remember, TechRant exists for both informative and entertainment purposes and is intended to be enjoyable for all.

Follow-up discussions should only quote relevant passages of the original posting. The daily volume of messages requires members to be responsible in removing unnecessary text from follow-ups to efficiently use net resources. Repetitive or me-too postings are discouraged.

In order to prevent spreading computer viruses and causing problems with some mail software, postings of graphics or image files, sound files, attached files, or very large (over 40,000 characters) messages are discouraged. Notice of availability of such files should instead be posted if distribution is desired, and mailings can be made privately to interested individuals. Alternatively, notify the administrator privately, and he will make the files available for download via HTTP or FTP.

6. Membership Management

First and foremost: While anyone can join the list, only subscribers can post messages. Any messages sent from an unsubscribed account will end up in the bit bucket. That means the spammers can't get through.

Second: Your email address will not be sold, traded, donated or otherwise knowlingly provided to any other person, place or thing for any reason. Period.

Third: Disclosure of your actual name is entirely up to you.

Individuals can subscribe and unsubscribe from TechRant directly. All membership requests are to be sent to the list itself.

Send subscribe or unsubscribe requests to:

techrant@take5-net.com

Include one of the following as the only text as the subject of the message:

If you need to send from a second email address (such as home and SDHC), please contact the list administrator, Mike Frederick for assistance.

Members are strongly encouraged to unsubscribe from the list if their mail will be unreachable for any period of time, or if they are changing internet addresses. Chronic bounced mail (i.e. mailbox full, user unknown, unreachable mail address, or other such error messages) will result in removal of an address from the list by the administrator. Generally several days grace will be provided unless the volume of bounces becomes unmanageable. Please contact the list administrator, Mike Frederick if you require assistance.

This list is run by the Arrow Mailing List System. It runs on a Dell tower through a cable modem to a Take5 Linux server in Texas. It is software, therefore it only understands simple commands like 'subscribe' and 'help'. If you need to talk to a human, send email to Mike Frederick
